What Is Sports Hypnosis?

Sports hypnosis, as the name suggests, is simply hypnotism directed towards improving sports performance. It's used by all levels of sportspeople, from amateurs to top level professionals, and it's successfully used to get better results in just about every type of sport. But how does hypnosis, which is concerned with the mind, help with sport, which is all about the body?

First of all there is the concept of mental rehearsal or visualisaton. Any form of mental visualisation is hypnotic, since it involves using the imagination to rehearse the future.

The second sports hypnosis principle, which follows on from mental rehearsal, is creating positive expectation. Expectation is a powerful force in human motivation and behavior.

The third sports hypnosis principle addresses the downside of the first two. It is, of course, quite possible to mentally rehearse failure and to build negative expectations!

Finally, sports hypnosis works on the principle of the mind-body connection.

Hypnotherapy is becoming a more recognised method for reducing feelings of anxiety. Hypnotherapy for anxiety can help boost confidence and self-belief, while reducing feelings of fear and intense worry. It can help you develop the ability to access the calm state of mind needed to overcome the often-overwhelming emotions you are living with.
Hypnotherapy for anxiety aims to access your unconscious. Using the power of suggestion, it works to promote positive change. These suggestions can be tailored to help you learn what triggers your anxiety and why, as well as changing the way you react towards them.
Hypnotherapy can begin to teach you how to regain a sense of control and normality. It can help you understand what triggers your anxiety and how to cope when you start to feel anxious.

Stress and Anxiety are normal in life until they are exaggerated to a place of discomfort. Using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and positive imagery (Hypnosis) can holistically and without medication help reduce the impact of stress. Sports Hypnosis is a combination of anchoring to calm and focus while having a place in ones mind for success.

It's Dirty but Is It Unhealthy?

Why dirty is good and helps the immune system while hand sanitizers create more harm than good.

We have ten microbes in our bodies for every cell, which means that we are basically walking bacteria farms, and that's what makes us healthy. As our knowledge of bacteria grows, we are beginning to understand the incredibly important role that probiotics play in our bodies. Anti-bacterials kill all bacteria indiscriminately, even the good kinds that your kids need to thrive. The microbes found in dirt help to train their budding immune systems to respond to bacteria and they populate their gut flora and perform a plethora of functions. Studies show that kids who grow up on farms or with dogs are 20% less likely to develop asthma thanks to the microbes that they are exposed to.

Spoiled to the Point of No Return

I remember being a counselor at summer camp. The first lesson they taught us was: Are we the camper's friend or counselor. If we were the camper's counselor we could control the group. If we were attempting to be their friend, we would eventually find ourselves being walked on and fail miserably. Being a camp counselor was a great prerequisite to being a parent.

Here's an excerpt  from a an article that demonstrates this specific challenge to parenting
There is a silent tragedy developing right now, in our homes, and it concerns our most precious jewels - our children. Through my work with hundreds of children and families as an occupational therapist, I have witnessed this tragedy unfolding right in front of my eyes. Our children are in a devastating emotional state!

The key to successful sleep is relaxation. Hypnosis is most effective in relaxing the mind and the body clearing the way for a good night sleep. Excerpts from the article below describes how hypnosis helps patients sleep better
THURSDAY, June 19, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A short session of hypnosis might lead to a better night's sleep, says a team of Swiss researchers.

After listening to a sleep-promoting audio tape containing hypnotic suggestion, women who are suggestible to hypnosis spent two-thirds less time awake, and about 80 percent more time in deep sleep compared to those who slept without the hypnotic suggestion.

"There have been many reports that hypnosis can be a good thing for promoting sleep," said study co-author Bjorn Rasch, a professor with the department of psychology in the division of biopsychology and methods at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Basball Pitcher Says the Toughest Part of the Game is Mental

The ability to comeback after a loss  can be accomplished with Sports Hypnosis and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). To some degree successful athletes do this for themselves as pitcher Charlie Butler describes in the article excerpt below.
“Baseball is mentally challenging. So if you have a couple [of] bad outings, staying positive, knowing that the next time you go you’re going to get another shot, you’re going to do [well] again,” Butler said.

The positivity that Butler finds not only comes from his teammates and coaches, but from within himself.

“Some days you have to personally tell yourself ‘I’m going to be okay,’” Butler said.

Butler does not just talk about the importance of a positive attitude; he lives it. As a pitcher for the Black Bears and for the Bravehearts, Butler wrote two messages on his hat that he tells himself every time he takes the field: “prove people wrong” and “be your best self.”

“There’s always going to be people that tell you ‘you can’t do something’ or ‘you’re never going to make it.’ Believe in yourself. Whatever you do, believe you can do it, because if you don’t believe you can do it, you’re not going to be able to do it,” Butler said.

Butler carries these philosophies into other parts of his life. Butler emphasizes: “Stay positive, have fun, and work hard. You get what you work for.”

The Battlefield of Sports

7/15/2014

It is on the Battlefield of Sports where we are allowed to an openly express some of our suppressed animal instincts.

What is it that drives us to compete? Is it that in sports we can express all those penned up emotions that we have been taught are not acceptable expressing in public?  In competition we have the opportunity to test our muscles and endurance, to push and be pushed while releasing all that unused energy and finding acceptance in the process.

Is this desire for physical conflict a carryover from an earlier time in our lives?  Maybe it is an expression of the animal within each of us asking to be tested physically and to feel strong after the conquest. We express all sorts of behaviors during sports that might get us arrested for off the field.  This is why the concept, "leave it on the field" is so important.

When watching dogs play and noticing how they use all parts of their body to express and vent their energies.  Babies express themselves just fine by crying, screaming, yelling and laughing without evaluation. As babyhood ends so does our ability to express our free flowing emotions. Does not being able to express our emotions mean that we don't have them? Hardly, it does mean that we would be well advised to find an outlet for what we feel and not to surpress it. Many times anger is a result of excess energy in the individual.  Once that energy is utilized, the person feels better, less stressed, less angry and generally more relaxed.

Our need to battle may be deep within our makeup as individuals.  One of the healthier ways to fulfill that need is in sport.  It is on the battlefield of sports were we meet to compete and to push and yell and scream and at the end, to thank all the other like minded players for coming to play.
