What does a football coach do in the off season? He might spend time with his family, travel some and maybe consider his plans for the upcoming season. Coach Dantonio is a coach who can accomplish all three at once. In May 2013 he and his family flew to LA and visited Pasadena and the Rose Bowl. They walked on the field as the coach visualized his team being in that spot at the end of the upcoming season playing for The Rose Bowl Game or the BCS Championship Game. “This is where we make it happen. January 1st of this year or 2014 as we get into it—it will be our time…it will be our time.” In January, there he stood with his entire team in Pasadena again this time to win the 100th Rose Bowl.
Does Coach Dantonio’s imagination run away with him or does his imagination lead him to his accomplishments? What role does our imagination play in our future and in what we actually accomplish? It is the images we put into our mind that activates our mind’s subconscious computer, creating a ‘subconscious destination’. This destination was useful when we were learning to walk and to talk and to emulate our parents and others to become socialized into society. It is rare that we accomplish anything without having envisioned it first. This envisioning or imagining moves the subconscious into completion mode, which acts as a goal machine moving the person toward the image created. The more vivid and repetitive the image, the greater the chance is of completion. Coach Dantonio knew the benefit of a vivid positive image when he visited Pasadena in May and made his prediction. His team was coming off a 6 loss season in 2012. To believe he would compete with his team in the Rose Bowl the following year required a leap of faith. It began in the mind as a thought, was accepted into the subconscious as an image, and activated by a plan. Coach Dantonio’s plan was to find the inches, the small incremental changes required to win games. It appears Coach Dantonio did his job by letting his imagination run away with him and ending the season with a coach of the year award and the 100th year Rose Bowl Championship Trophy. Many professional athletes, like David Beckham, turn to sports hypnosis to get over slumps. Slumps are created when expectation levels become higher. Many athletes need help slowing down the process to identify the "glitch" or the doubt that is preventing them from achieving the success that had previously been easier to achieve. All athletes want to achieve continued excellence in their sport. Hypnosis and imagery are the best tools to set that intention. This is helpful for the athlete who is looking to maintain a high level of performance as well as the athlete who is moving to the next level. Hypnosis can also assist the athlete who is dealing with anxieties or blocks that may get in the way. With so many principles in life that exist on polarity it is understandable why it may be hard to find balance. Consider how good and bad, heaven and hell, right and wrong are polarities that religions often capitalize on. In their efforts they can sometimes further our confusion and our individual ability to balance. In some faiths it the polarity within the individual that is focused upon and contemplated.
As a hypnotist it is the conflict in our mind that is of special interest. The conscious mind and the subconscious mind may occupy the same space but they are dissimilar and have very different interests. It is this polarity between these two that allows us to exist as a higher form of life. It is also the lack of understanding their purposes that can be the cause for so much frustration. The conscious mind is our desire. It is the best of we want from life and what propels us into a direction. The conscious mind dreams of change and stirs the excitement of potentials within our mind. The conscious mind also comprises about 12% of the total mind. The subconscious mind is our motivation for doing anything. The main function of our subconscious is to protect us. The subconscious protects us by keeping things the same. The subconscious does not like change and it comprises about 88% of the total. It is understandable how our conscious desire of dreams, goals and purpose, might come into conflict with the subconscious motivation to keep things the same by causing us to respond to change with fear, uncertainty or procrastination. As our two minds continue to disagree we can become disappointed. With enough disappointment, we have imbalance. We desire so many things for ourselves in the conscious 12% of our mind while the larger and more influential subconscious mind holds us back from having it. It is the imagination and the emotions associated with it that can link the two minds. To imagine your desire as something you already have and is already yours. Seeing whatever it is as a part of you and not something of the future. This will allow the subconscious to accept it as a new potential in your life. Each time you reinforce this image the subconscious grows less resistant and more accepting to the idea. With practice we can relearn to create a vivid image which was the cornerstone to our learning when we were children. This is more than wishful thinking because chemical and energetic links known as neuropathways are being created to merge thought and action. Using your imagination in this way is the key to utilizing our two minds intelligently and finding the balance within ourselves We all have events in our lives that we would rather ignore. These upcoming events can be in the form of a competition or a talk in front of others. It may be a medical procedure, or having a conversation with the boss. These events can stress us out for days, weeks or even months before they actually occur. Even worse, we might put them off indefinitely so they can hound us forever or to fall into the abyss of "should haves"
Hypnosis, or imagination, is the perfect tool to help you prepare for an event that is especially stressful. Picture in your mind going to that event. See yourself preparing, experiencing and concluding this stressful event in a relaxed and confident fashion. The mind does not distinguish between the fantasy of a well imagined event and the reality of it. Your mind will accept this event as if you had already accomplished it, thereby easing the pressure. When it comes time for the actual event, your mind will think it is going through it for a second or even third time. It is possible to reduced stress that leads to any stressful event and to assure a more relaxed and successful outcome. Two opposite emotions cannot occupy the body at the same time. It is possible to replace anxiety with relaxation. When hypnotized, a person can slow down their mind's pictures and as a result begin to understand what brings on their anxiety. It is then possible to anchor back to relaxation at stressful times. As we do this we begin to create a new behavior that is associated to being more relaxed.
It is estimated that between 15-20% of the adult population in the United States is walking around in a state of hypnosis. It is called Environmental Hypnosis and is brought on by an overload from the world around us. Once in hypnosis we become hyper-suggestible. When escaping into environmental hypnosis by overload, there is no guide and the person is hyper-suggestable to the many negatives in the world, further adding to that person's overload.
Should you feel that overload frequently causes you to drift into an environmental hypnosis, it is suggested to count yourself out of hypnosis. Counting out consists of counting from 0-5; and with each number you are feeling yourself becoming more awake and aware. At the number 5 you are feeling wide awake and refreshed. Learning to count out of hypnosis is a good tool for someone who gets overloaded frequently. In contrast, therapeutic hypnosis uses the hyper-suggestability for the benefit of the client. When the client is relaxed, it is possible to offer mutually agreed upon positive suggestions to that client making it easy for the person to create desired behavioral change. One way of reducing overload is by replacing anxiety with relaxation. Avoiding and reducing overload can be accomplished with as little as one hypnosis session. All athletics involve obsessive amounts practice. Keeping the mind clear of doubt and expectations up is not always easy. Imagery and practicing the events in your mind allows the athlete to slow the images down to see the process more clearly and, therefore, make any minor corrections. They may find they want to create, reestablish or improve upon their their efforts in order to maximize their excellence.
In many ways your mind is like your car. When you drive somewhere you know the destination. Without a destination, such as a street or address number it is impossible to arrive or even know in which direction to start. Your mind drives you in a similar way and it is always running. If it has a destination then your mind will move you in that direction. Without a destination you might find yourself circling and begin to question your purpose or direction or other aspects of yourself.
Take a minute or two before bedtime: Picture yourself the way you would like to be when you wake up in the morning. What characteristics would you like to have or feel when you wake up and begin to start your day? See a ‘Positive Self Image’ of yourself before bedtime and establish a ‘subconscious destination’. This is a place and direction for your subconscious mind to move you. The subconscious has been called our goal machine so give it a direction and see how you are feeling after 4-5 days. You are encouraged to create your own or use one or two of the suggestions below. Seeing yourself with the characteristics is good so imagine or picture yourself as having them, not sometime in the future but right now. Some suggestions: I see myself standing more upright feeling supported by my body I am wearing a calm smile with my shoulders relaxed by my sides I am feeling the confidence in my abilities and the decisions I make I feel more open and excited to what new experiences might come I see giving more of myself to another (or to others) I can see and feel myself giving more to myself I feel preserved and well taken care of by another (or by others) I feel preserved and nurtured by myself with love Creating an image is easier for some then for others. It was in our childhood that we began to create images. Try tapping into your younger self when your imagination could picture just about anything. The Body cannot make the mind sick. The Mind can make the body sick or make it well. Lead with your mind.
